Harrisburg, PA (October 10, 2018) — The National Utility Contractors Association Pennsylvania (NUCA PA) announced today that Terra Works, Incorporated of Clarion has been awarded the association’s 2018 Safety Award for small companies (up to 50,000 man hours).

Terra Works, Inc. earned the NUCA PA safety award in 2013, 2014 and 2016 as well, based upon the company’s excellent safety record, its safety programs, communication, training and education. NUCA PA has an extensive set of criteria and a thorough review process of safety practices that it employs to select its safety award winners.

Terra Works, Inc. is a civil construction contractor founded in 2002 by Ryan W. Miles, Sr. and incorporated in 2009. The company is owned by three brothers: Ryan W. Miles, who is president; Curtis C. Miles (secretary) and Theron L. Miles (treasurer).

The company performs a variety of civil construction projects including public utility work, concrete, paving and site work, and does work in both the municipal and commercial sectors.

Terra Works, Inc. takes a “no-nonsense” approach to safety, providing, among its safety programs, 10 hours of OSHA training, as well as training in confined space work, excavations, trenching, CPR and first aid. All employees are given training in field-leadership to ensure they understand that it takes an entire crew to complete a project safely and on-time.

Among its recent efforts to further improve its safety policies and record, was the 2016 addition of a qualified Safety Manager to assist in maintaining compliance and help the company reach the next level in terms of its safety management system.

Ryan Koser, Terra Works, Inc.’s Safety and Human Resources Manager for the past three years, has a degree in Safety Management from Slippery Rock University. He started the company safety program “from the ground up.” He created and implemented a company safety manual with 43 safety programs, created a safety committee, decreased the company’s Mod rate from 1.063 in 2015 to 0.767 in 2018 and has created a safe work environment for all employees.

“Terra Works, Inc.’s vision and commitment are clear in regard to being the best commercial contractor serving the western Pennsylvania area,” company President Ryan W. Miles, Sr. said. “With the safety practices we already had in place and our safety manager and continued emphasis on safety, we can proudly say the Terra Works team has the experience and ability to finish any job safely and on-time.”

NUCA Pennsylvania is a non-profit statewide trade association comprised of nearly 300 heavy highway contractors and suppliers specializing in sewer and water infrastructure construction.
